Beenie Man @ Jamaican Gold’s 13th Anniversary Party

This past Sunday, Jamaican Gold held their 13th Anniversary party at Forbidden City. There was a special guest performance by Beenie Man. The night started out with some fairly decent juggling by White Lightning. It was a good mix of dancehall and hip hop. The audience was then treated to two dance performances from a Japanese dance troupe (videos below - they start off a little dark but eventually the spotlights were turned on). Beenie Man didn’t hit the stage until very close to 1 am, so right away you knew this was going to be a short set. It may be going on 10 years since I have last seen the self-proclaimed “King of the Dancehall” perform live. The first thing I noticed (besides his broken arm) is that he looks a lot thinner than I remember. Granted he was always mawga but was he always this thin? Despite the usual sound/technical/dj problems that accompany these small club shows, he still managed to give a good set. Entertaining the crowd with old and new favorites, his unique style of dancing and constant threats to the DJ who kept messing up his tracks. While I have to disclose that Bounty Killer is still my favorite DJ, I thoroughly enjoyed his show. As usual Beenie “tear down” the place and definitely left the place wanting more after he finished his set. “The Doctor” is always entertaining and there was nothing but good vibes at his show (which given the current state of dancehall music is always a very good thing).
